What makes effective teaching practice?

If our nation hopes to improve teaching quality, we need to understand the practices and knowledge that contribute to high quality teaching. The Understanding Teacher Quality (UTQ) project is examining potential measures of teaching quality to gain a fuller understanding of what makes for effective teaching practice. To this end, we are studying a wide range of measures and practices including direct observations of classroom teaching, analyses of classroom assignments and student work, measures of teachers' pedagogical and content knowledge, and measures of student achievement.

This study is supported by a 4-year grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation, and is a collaboration of Educational Testing Service (ETS), RAND Corporation, and the Institute for Social Research at the University of Michigan (ISR-UM).
